Student protesters avoid fines - Rockford, IL - Rockford Register Star

All 20 students opted for eight hours of service at the location of their school’s choosing instead of fines.
All but three Belvidere High students ticketed were in court. Those who weren’t were found guilty by Circuit Court Judge Eugene Doherty. They won’t be given a service option and must pay the $100 fine, plus court fees

Belvidere School District will assign and monitor the service projects. Belvidere High School Assistant Principal Mike Yates will register students from his school for public service and will be charged with keeping track of the work’s completion. On April 29, students who plead guilty from Belvidere North will be asked to coordinate their public service work with Assistant Principal Mike LaScola at their school.

The 43 students who paid the $100 fine at the Public Safety Building before April 15 to avoid a court appearance also are eligible for community service, said City Attorney Mike Drella
