Welcome

Welcome to the Community Cupboard, the first school-based food pantry in the state of Illinois.  We provide food assistance to families with children attending District #100 schools regardless of need.

Located inside Belvidere Endeavor High School (1320 East Avenue, Belvidere), the Community Cupboard is a choice pantry that allows clients to select items that best suit the needs of their family.

Hours of operation are every Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. including spring break, winter break, and the summer months.

Food Assistance

All pantry services are provided at no charge and are made available through charitable donations from local community groups, service organizations, individuals, and businesses.

The pantry offers:  Canned and frozen grocery items, personal care products such as shampoo and toothpaste, diapers and other baby items, household cleaning supplies such as laundry and dish soap, and fresh fruits and vegetables when available.  *Items may vary.

Clients may receive food assistance once every four weeks and are asked to bring bags, boxes, or laundry baskets to carry food.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the backbone of the Community Cupboard and play a large role in its success.

Ways to get involved:  (1) Deliveries are received on the first and third Thursday of the month around 10 a.m.  Volunteers are needed to receive, break down, check in, and put away stock.  (2) The operation of the pantry every Thursday afternoon requires the assistance of about 8 volunteers.  Duties include checking clients into the pantry, accompanying them as they shop, replenishing food items on the shelves, and taking groceries to cars.

Sign up in advance is recommended to ensure sufficient volunteers are available to assist clients.  Please call 815-544-8528 for more information or to sign up.

Items Needed

Personal care products such as shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant.
Paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels, and Kleenex.
Household cleaning products such as dish soap, liquid laundry soap, window and wood cleaners.
Baby items such as diapers, wipes, shampoo, and food.

Monetary donations are also accepted and appreciated.

The Community Cupboard is part of the Belvidere School District and is a recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

North Chicago school board to be dissolved - chicagotribune.com

The Illinois State Board of Education has authorized the removal of the North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 school board, citing nine years of poor academic performance.
State Superintendent Christopher Koch will take steps to replace the local board with a five-member independent authority, which will operate the district and work toward "meaningful reform," officials announced Thursday.
In 2011, only 52 percent of District 187 students met or exceeded academic standards as measured under the federal No Child Left Behind law, according to the state.

ROCKTON — Only 704 students out of more than 1.6 million who took the ACT test in 2011 received a perfect score of 36.

Bryce Becker, a 17-year-old junior at Hononegah High School, is a part of the one-tenth of one percent who can say they accomplished that feat.

“I knew my score would be good because I got a 33 on the ACT the first time I took the test,” Bryce said. “But it was really more of a running joke that I would get a perfect score.”
