Feelings mixed over need for new teachers in Belvidere schools - Rockford, IL - Rockford Register Star

By Jennifer Wheeler

Forty-three percent of union members who participated in a BEA survey in the spring said they are looking for education jobs outside the Belvidere district because they cannot afford to stay.

Educators went without longevity pay increases for three years — while insurance costs went up — before the School Board approved a step increase in July.

The union fears that more teachers will walk without pay hikes and improvements in working conditions.

Kishwaukee closes, leaves Belvidere student with hard transition - WREX.com – Rockford’s News Leader

While many children don't give school a thought during summer, the change prompted a lot of discussion for Abby's family.
"We've definitely done a lot of talking and thinking about it," said Holly Houk, Abby's mother.  "It's going to be harder at a big school.  We're going to miss that and you know, she's going to miss her friends."
And while Abby's mom is concerned about how her daughter will fit in, she's also encouraged by her new school's reputation.
"From what I've seen I think it's going to be great, I hear the principal there is really great so I'm hoping it's going to be as good an experience as we had at Kishwaukee."
The first day back to school for Belvidere School District students is August 14th.
